Fire Cider Workshop

Build your apothecary during the Fall Festival!* Join Village Markets director and local herbalist, Kassie Dawn, for their Fire Cider Workshop on Saturday, October 26th, held indoors at the Swan River Community Hall in Bigfork, Montana. Two time slots are available (12-1:30pm and 2pm-3:30pm). 12 participants max per time slot.

What is fire cider? Fire cider has been widely used over the centuries as a traditional herbal tonic, or oxymel, by actively supporting your vitality and stimulating digestion whilst warming the body with fire-y ingredients during cold months ahead.

The Fire Cider Workshop is an immersive kitchen apothecary experience that combines basic kitchen skills and herbalism. Participants are invited to indulge in their culinary senses and assist in preparing a quart jar of fire cider. This workshop focuses on the basics of Fire Cider preparation, a unique infusion of antioxidant-packed alliums, peppers, warming spices, roots, and culinary herbs.

We will be working with common allergens, like cinnamon, amongst other ingredients. If you have a known food allergy, we advise that you skip this workshop as many ingredients will be passed around the table. All ingredients and materials are provided. Participants are encouraged to bring an apron. Note: parking is located across the road at Swan River Elementary School.

*We will be hosting our 3rd Annual Fall Festival during this event! Shop at the artisan booths, enjoy live music, capture memories at the photo booth, enter in the raffle, and visit the food and beverage trucks! This is a family fun event — costumes encouraged! 2022’s Highlander Game Participants (Kyle is pictured in the back row towards the right).

Kyle has participated in the Highland Games for the past two years as a beginner (2020-2022). Here he is shown doing the sheaf toss, a traditional Scottish agricultural sport in which a pitchfork is used to hurl a 16# to 22# burlap sack stuffed with straw over a horizontal bar, which is raised to increase difficulty. One at a time, each player must turn their backs to the bar, build momentum by swinging the sheaf with the pitchfork, then hurl it over their shoulders over the bar. the sheaf must go over the bar to score, it cannot go under the bar or directly hit the bar.

Our friends, Ryan and Grace (local owners of Cranky Goose Hill Farm in Lakeside), surprised us at our booth last year with a bouquet of their homegrown flowers. They also participate in the Highland Games with Kyle, along with their son.
